The advantage of De Zingende Stad is that it is a lesson plan covering a variety of subjects. It combines musical skills with geography, history, ICT and social studies. The projects offers a four-year curriculum for primary school pupils ages 8 through 12. The lessons for a particular age group can also be given independently: a single lesson series consists of six lessons and a final presentation.
The method is flexible: teachers can either use De Zingende Stad as a ready-made lesson plan or easily add their own elements to the lessons.
De Zingende Stad addresses a variety of social skills. The project promotes self-confidence and strengthens the pupils’ feeling of identity, particularly in relation to their own neighbourhood. The children co-operate in carrying out games and scavenger hunts. Additionally the project encourages parental participation.
De Zingende Stad will be available to all primary schools beginning in February 2010.
The lesson programme consists of:
• an introductory workshop for teachers
• (digital) lesson plans and instructions
• a digital project page
• a license for Games Atelier
• GPS mobile phones (on loan).
The project requires the school to have computers with adequate internet connections, including access to the websites of Yo! Opera and Games Atelier, Google Maps, YouTube, news sites, Kids for Kids, etc. A beamer and screen, or a digital blackboard are advisable.
