Step 4: allow the entire mixture to simmer for several weeks
Now the whole team is going to tackle the creative process together. This is done partly as a group and partly individually. The composer makes the music, a ‘composition’, that goes with your text. The first rough draft will go online. You and the singer will both be notified when this draft can be viewed and you can register your reactions online. What do you like about it? What would you rather have differently? The composer will refer back to your comments as he continues to work on his composition.
The singer then proceeds in the same way. He or she will sing the opera, put it on line and wait for a reaction from you, the text-writer, and the composer. This process allows you to eventually come up with a finished product everyone is proud of.
How you all carry out this creative process is up to you. How often do you want to get together? And how will you present your own material to the other team members? As you’ve already seen, the website is a handy tool: you can share music and text, and keep in touch with one another by sending messages back and forth. Because we consider frequent communication very important, we’ll check from time to time how the team is doing on-line
