Kuil

In a special joint venture with Het Lab youth theatre workshop, Yo! Opera Laboratory and a number of young opera-makers contributed a 10-minute opera and an exhibition about a world without animals for the theatre production Jong Vee (Young Livestock).

Composers Thomas Myrmel and Wolny Zbigniew, poet Ruben van Gogh, visual artist Jake de Vos and 31 children from the Rietendakschool in Utrecht produced a musical and visual memorial to extinct animal species: Kuil (hole/cavity).

Each of the children adopted an extinct animal, reviving its voice, image and history in the form of a monument. These visual testimonials were exhibited as part of the Jong Vee production at the Berenkuil Youth Theatre, and also formed the décor for a short opera about a world in which animals are totally extinct.

Het laatste dier, het laatste dier
ik wil het laatste dier
hebben en houwen
Houwen van dat dier

The last animal, the last animal
I want to have and hold
the last animal
Love that animal

- Ruben van Gogh

Took place on:
5, 8, 13 & 14 October 2006
Jeugdtheaterhuis de Berenkuil

Kuil was a co-production of Yo! Opera Laboratory and Het Lab Youth Theatre Workshop, and was made possible in part by the Ministry of OC&W, the Province of Utrecht, the Utrecht City Council and Société Gavigniès.
