De Operaflat
You walk along the gallery, you ring the bell, you hear footsteps, the door is carefully unlocked. The door opens slowly, and then ...Twenty-five resounding doorway dramas have been produced by pupils at the Overvecht primary school together with composers and singers from nine Dutch conservatoires.
De Operaflat (the operatic block of flats) was a very special happening during the 2005 edition of the festival. Singers, both amateurs and professionals, performed their own repertoire on the doormat of a resident of the “operatic block of flats” on the Faustdreef, in the Overvecht district, Utrecht. The audience rang the bell, and were sung to in the doorway.
The singers ensured a broad mix of songs and arias that greatly moved the audience, the residents of the flats and the singers themselves. The singing coming from De Operaflat could be heard over a large area of the Overvecht district.
This called for a repeat performance in 2007. For this second version of De Operaflat, 25 pupils from the Overvecht public primary school aged 7 to 11 wrote lyrics (a libretto) specially for a particular doorway in the block of flats: mini operas, a minute in length, about unexpected and coincidental meetings.
At the end of the last writing workshops, the pupils presented their librettos to the composers and singers. The composers set the lyrics to music, and the singers performed these mini operas on Saturday 3 November 2007 in the doorways of the flats on Faustdreef.
