De Klaptafel

In the eleven years of its existence, Yo! Opera developed from a festival organisation, offering an overview of international developments in the field of youth opera, to a production platform, connecting opera and society. It treated opera as a catch-all term, allowing youth and adults to use all kinds of disciplines in forming their own ideas on opera. The projects undertaken by Yo! Opera during the last few years of its existence had as a primary goal to find a connection with people, and not to depart from a concrete artistic agenda.
The project De Klaptafel [The Folding Table] was a special farewell by Yo! Opera to all those who have played an important role in the eleven years of its existence. At the table people ate, laughed, memories were shared and personal stories were assembled, focussing on the impact the collaboration with Yo! Opera had on the private lives of our guests. The result was a collection of personal anecdotes and inspiring stories on what it had meant to all these people to take part in one of the many projects Yo! Opera initiated.
The folding table was moved to several locations where Yo! Opera productions once came about. The backbone of Yo! Opera was invited to the table: a last round of applause to make clear that we could not have accomplished what we accomplished without them and to show our appreciation for their commitment, creativity and effort. These ingredients enabled our projects to go forward! Bus drivers, musicians, pupils at primary and secondary schools, composers, shop owners, teachers, staff of the sewage treatment plant: they all supported Yo! Opera in realising inspiring collaboration projects in many different locations in and outside of Utrecht, always taking opera as a starting point.
These special connections and interactions between people, their ideas, voices and portraits have been made available for everyone on a special website. The website shows the power of art and creativity and the valuable bonds resulting from it. We express the wish that other art institutions and organisations follow our example: to find the meaning of art to people. All people.
Stichting DOEN supports project 'De Klaptafel' by Stichting Yo! Opera by a financial contribution from the BankGiro Loterij. De Klaptafel shows the meaning of Yo! Opera's special work during the past few years. DOEN states that the innovative working methods of our organisation may be a source of inspiration to the entire cultural sector.
